>> Budo in general
Budo is the general term for all japanese martial arts. This includes the martial arts where weapons are used like kendo or naginata as well as the martial arts that do not use any weapons like judo or karate. At Nami-Kai we train the following budo disciplines ; kendo, iaido, naginata en kyudo.

The word budo consists of two Japanese characters.

"Bu" - War / Warrior / Combat

"Do" - Way

The word budo can be translated as “the way of war/combat” or “the way of the warrior/soldier”. This gives away the origin of the budo disciplines. They are derived from the skills and techniques that were used by Japanese warrior/soldiers, amongst other the well-known samurai.

The character “do” indicates the spiritual side of practicing martial arts. The practice of a budo discipline can be seen as following the path that leads to development of self, self control, peace and eventually even enlightenment. In most of the budo disciplines traces of several eastern philosophies can be found like zen buddhism, taoism and confucianism.
